Projects, teams and workspaces

Your organisation can set up multi-level workspaces to govern institute-wide records and activity. On a more granular level, researchers can share information and collaborate on projects while keeping full control of rights and permissions. Version-controlled protocols can be shared and optimised among lab members. Labs can keep track of collective libraries of resources or troubleshoot results through streamlined projects. PIs can track how students are progressing through experiments in real-time and give comments at any point during the experiment.

Integrations and IT support

Labstep can integrate with local data servers to ensure backup of all institute-generated data. Labstep also seamlessly integrates with lab software systems and equipment to upload data. Our custom-built Folder Watcher system automatically attaches result files to experiments from selected desktop folders, from both shared or personal computers. Our open API directly integrates and seamlessly transfers data between Labstep and any other analysis software. We provide 24/7 user support to all researchers and work closely with your institute’s IT department to ensure all your needs are met.

Data safety and security

Research data as well as user data safety takes high priority at Labstep. That is why all data is hosted in the SOC-compliant Amazon S3 data centers, an industry leading server service renowned for its data durability and security and all data is backed up continuously to the cloud and daily at several geographical locations. For data encryption, we use the TLS1.2 protocol to encrypt all data and have regular updates ensuring that we are insusceptible to security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, we use private networks (VPN) shielded from the public internet. To offer you full compliance with e.g. 21 CFR part 11 through complete audit trails, digital signatures & user authentication. Last, access tiering secures all data against unauthorized access.

How to pitch Labstep

Labstep is a free, flexible research environment that connects electronic notebook functionality, inventory management, applications and data in one collaborative workspace. Based on frustrations in the lab with pen and paper and existing ELNs and LIMS, Labstep offers features that streamline research data documentation and knowledge transfer by capturing real-time process data.

Labstep is more than just an electronic lab notebook. It’s an all-in-one data and inventory platform that keeps track of your research, manages your inventory and integrates with your favourite analysis softwares. The platform is designed to reduce researchers’ time and effort, aid with process optimisation and increasing accuracy and reproducibility of scientific data.

The platform is free and forever will be for academia, so that the features are accessible to all within the scientific community. Labstep is able to offer a stable platform with unlimited storage space to academia without charge, sustained by the Labstep for Enterprise business model.

Since launching, the platform has been adopted by researchers at over 900 universities around the world, including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and MIT. Rapid organic adoption has resulted in multiple high-profile institute-wide deployments, the most notable being the Francis Crick Institute in London, Europe’s largest biomedical research institute.
